Nevada's Geological Survey

Creation of map services and datasets have been an important component of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) modernization and adding of new capabilities to maps. Here you can browse all datasets available for download on the NBMG open data page. As we update and change databases, our open data page will always reflect the most up-to-date data at NBMG.

About NBMG

The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology is a research and public service unit of the University of Nevada and is the state geological survey. NBMG scientists conduct research and publish reports on mineral resources, engineering geology, environmental geology, hydrogeology, geologic hazards, and geologic mapping.

We are involved in earth science education and outreach and compose guidebooks for nonprofessionals, teachers, and students. Bureau staff often present lectures and short courses, and participate in Earth Science Teacher Workshops in northern and southern Nevada. Many of our faculty and staff also participate in Earth Science Week every October by leading field trips for the public to geologically significant locations in Nevada.

NBMG cooperates with numerous state and federal agencies in conducting research and in providing geologic and resource information. Research results are published as NBMG bulletins, reports, maps, and special publications as well as in federal publications and scientific journals. In addition to addressing the needs for geologic information by conducting research, publishing reports and maps, and creating computer databases, staff members assist the public, industry, and government agencies by answering specific questions regarding Nevada geology and resources.

Preserving and sharing data

At NBMG, we are working to make our datasets more easily accessible to the public, contractors, and companies alike in the attempt to further collaboration and scientific research.

We are currently working to expand our network of freely available datasets including geothermal data, DEMs, air photos and imagery, fault data, and earthquake data, among others. Please be patient as we work to grow and distribute our databases.
